Saturday, January 21, 2006, 06:59 AMScofflaws looking for a free ride on Muni may soon hit a dead end: City officials want to generate more fare revenue on buses and trains by hiring a number of new employees to police fare collection.
Mayor Gavin Newsom said the move is an example of the type of creative solution he wants to employ to close deficits in the budgets of Muni and The City next year.
Newsom briefly outlined his
budget priorities Wednesday, saying there are no plans for new taxes and he expected to raise fees for city services only marginally, while substantial one-time revenues will mean investments in The City’s potholed roads and its juvenile rehabilitation facilities. Newsom said the theme of this year’s budget is “compassion and common sense.”
